African Electronic Music 1975-1982 – Francis Bebey, 2011

🇨🇲 🎶 🎸 🔬 😄 Francis Bebey is undeniably a musical reference from Cameroon. A writer, ethnomusicologist, and musician, he began his career as a journalist at RFI and UNESCO before deciding to focus solely on music. As a child, he was introduced to traditional instruments such as the sanza and mouth bow, later learning the guitar. His studies also encompass the traditional harmonies of the Pygmies. An innovator at heart, he explores the fusion of emerging electronic music with African traditions, blending them with often humorous lyrics that depict the trials and habits of society. The advent of re-recording allowed him to compose and arrange freely. The result is as unclassifiable as it is irresistible, as seen in hits like La Condition Masculine or Agatha. In 2011, the label Born Bad Records published a well-regarded compilation titled African Electronic Music 1975-1982, taking us on a jubilant Afro-electro journey. Assisting in curating the selection were his daughter Kidi, his son Patrick, and our favourite digger, Julien Achard. The outcome is a dazzling double album, where surprises await at every turn.
