Sorry Bamba du Mali – 1977

,

🇲🇱 🎶 🌳 🎷 ✨ At the edge of the desert forest in Mopti, Mali, lies the homeland of Sorry Bamba. Orphaned at a young age, music became his outlet. Raised in the Dogon tradition, he formed several orchestras—Association Jeunesse RDA, Bani Jazz—and won the Mali Biennale three times with the Kanaga de Mopti. His encounter with Gilles Sala enabled the release of his first two albums on the Songhoï label, including this one, simply titled Sorry Bamba du Mali and published in 1977. Here, he masterfully blends tradition and modernity through four hypnotic, trance-like tracks, infused with jazz elements, Mandinka vocals, and the six-hole flute he had played since his youth. The album opens with one of his early hits, Yayoroba, which paved the way for his records to be distributed internationally. After this period, Sorry Bamba moved to Côte d’Ivoire and eventually Paris, achieving the international recognition he deserved. The singer, known for his distinctive white lock of hair, passed away in 2022.
