🎶🎤🎸🥁🔥 In 1975 Ikenga In Africa, the first official album by the Ikenga Super Stars of Africa, Nigeria’s best-loved band of all time, was released. Doubts remained over their relationship with two other albums released earlier in London under the name of the Nkengas. Contemporaries and close friends of Prince Nico Mbarga – who released his hit Sweet Mother the following year – they mix highlife and afro-funk on two 18-minute tracks, a festive trance that leaves no one indifferent, far from it! They play the famous Igbo Highlife from south-east Nigeria, which the Oriental Brothers claim to be the originators of. Be that as it may, this characteristic highlife comes from there, from that era, and was shared by many groups of the time. Ikenga sang in typical broken English, a pidgin typical of Nigeria, and was initially made up of musicians from the Igbo ethnic group. The group lasted until 1987, and its personnel evolved, integrating other ethnic groups as well as musicians from Cameroon.
