🇯🇲🕊️🎶👥📀 The group Uhuru (Swahili for Freedom) was formed in Jamaica in 1972 by Derrick « Duckie » Simpson. The band changed personnel frequently, and the start of international success came in 1980 – along with the name change to Black Uhuru – after their performance at Reggae Sunsplash. They were signed by Island Records and collaborated with the pair Sly & Robbie, first on the album Sinsemilla, then in 1981 on Red. Michael Rose and Puma Jones completed the band’s trio for an edgy record that entered Rolling Stone’s top 500 worldwide in 2023. Red intelligently blends roots reggae and eighties sounds, and Black Uhuru sign one of their biggest successes here, with tracks like Youth of Eglington and Sponji Reggae.
