Musa Ukungilandela – Juluka, 1984

Before Savuka, there was Juluka. The young Johnny Clegg formed this first band with Sipho Mchunu in 1969 in Johannesburg. They were already mixing Zulu and pop/rock cultures in a register that was, however, less commercial than Savuka later became. Musa Ukungilandela was released in 1984 on the French label Celluloid, and was the group’s last studio album. The following year, Mchunu returned to his Zulu roots, herding cattle.Johnny Clegg then formed the band Savuka and achieved international recognition with songs such as Asimbonanga or Scatterlings Of Africa. However, Mchunu and Clegg reunited once again in 1997 on the album Crocodile Love.
