🌴🎵🎸🌍💿 This compilation retraces the first four albums by Gratien Midonet, an artist from Martinique, released between 1979 and 1989. The reissue project arose from Cédric Lassonde’s interest in the track « Mari Rhont Ouve La Pot », which mixes ti-bwa and synthesizers. Having grown up far from Martinique, Midonet’s music knows no cultural boundaries, freely mixing gwoka, bèlè, folk, rock and African influences. While his 1979 track « Ven En Lévé » became an anthem of the independence movement, his work as a whole reveals a rich musical diversity, with varied orchestrations, lyrics in French and Creole, and traditional and modern instruments. The detailed notes on the album, released by Time Capsule, explore the career, philosophy and artistic vision of Midonet, who now lives in New Caledonia.
