Jean-Claude Gaspard was undoubtedly one of the leading figures on the Mauritian Sega scene. Born in 1946, his first big hit was Wachi Wala in 1968. This was followed by numerous records and growing recognition, particularly during the 1980s, including Ségas de l’île Maurice in 1988. As a true representative of sega, he performed around the Indian Ocean as well as in Europe, until his retirement from the scene in 2014. The artist was also renowned for his humour, which shone through in his lyrics. Jean-Claude Gaspard passed away in 2017.
