Almost sixty years ago, Lyonel Déjean created « Les Frères de Pétion-Ville », one of the very first Haitian mini-jazz bands, which was soon to become one of the island’s iconic groups under the name Frères Déjean, following in the footsteps of Ibo Combo and Shleu-Shleu. Their first album, however, was not released until more than ten years after the group was formed, in 1974. Their fourth album was one of their most successful, Bouki Ac Malice, recorded in New York by Henri Debs and released in 1977, with the hits Arrette and Débaké. Frères Déjean’s compas is particularly slick and finely constructed. Among the musicians is Yvon Louissaint, already featured here with his wonderful album Zin.
