Malmanoury – Kreyol Amazoni Orkestra, 1990

,

🇬🇫 🎻 🎺 🌿 🎶 From French Guiana, the Kreyol Amazoni Orkestra plays biguine, quadrille and mazurka, performing an original repertoire rooted in Caribbean Creole tradition. The orchestra was formed at the Ecole Régionale de Musique et de Danse Edgard Nibul in Cayenne, and produced its only album, Malmanoury, in 1990. Under the direction of Serge Long Him Nam, the band includes the bassist and leader of the VS Quartet, Victor Sabas. Brass, woodwinds and violins add a traditional classical flavour that is unmistakably reminiscent of Mahogany or Malavoi in Martinique, for example. And while the album is essentially instrumental, the orchestra does invite Josy Masse to sing on a few tracks. A living testimony to the enduring traditions of the South American coast.
