For the third instalment of his Jazz-Ka Philosophy, Franck Nicolas puts down his trumpet and produces an album played exclusively on conch shells. He brings along the faithful Sonny Troupé and Louis Allèbe Montjoly de Montaigne on ka and percussion. Alain Jean-Marie is also back (after recording part 1 in New York), alternating between piano and Fender Rhodes. Nicolas Breton’s cello adds a touch of nostalgia and classical influences. Kokiyaj, released in 2010, is an album in a class of its own, the conch shells giving it an almost aquatic atmosphere, where gwoka rhythms undulate and mingle with jazz.
😊 Fun fact: there’s also the longest barcode in the history of barcodes on the back…
