La Fleur et l’Oiseau was the last album by the much-missed Marius Cultier in 1983. A key pianist and composer from Martinique, Cultier left behind a body of work marked by the successful fusion of jazz and Creole sounds. The title track, sung by Jocelyne Béroard, was awarded the Grand Prix de la chanson française d’outre-mer by the SACEM. The rest of the album is instrumental, a fine blend of jazz tinged with gentle nostalgia and Creole influences. It’s a great pleasure to hear Marius Cultier on a few choruses that remind us, if we needed reminding, of the extent of his artistry. And a copy of this rare album, accompanied by a press review entirely typed by the journalist who programmed this precious work, which testifies to the interest shown in this recording release.
