One of the hidden gems of Creole jazz is Caribbean Cool Jazz by Guyanese guitarist Patrick Marie-Magdelaine, released in 2006. A discreet musician if ever there was one, he nonetheless has a career behind him that has seen him play with Papa Wemba, Geoffrey Oryema as well as Swedish singer Sofi Hellborg. For several years now, he has also been the guitarist with the Manu Dibango Orchestra. He has also played alongside Roger Raspail and Anthony Joseph. In an acoustic quintet, ‘Panama’ takes us on a journey that is as much Latin as it is Creole, assisted by Tom McClung on keyboards, Arnold Moueza on percussion, Guy Nsangue on bass and Valéry Lobé on drums. A cool jazz delight that’s virtually impossible to find nowadays.
