Midonet is best known for his hit Ven En Levé, which has been taken up by numerous artists and is a standard-bearer for independence movements. But that’s not the whole story, and Midonet’s wide-ranging influences include the West Indies – Martinique and Guadeloupe without distinction – Africa, rock, with occasional hints of country and zouk… In 2021, Cédric Lassonde’s Time Capsule label published this retrospective of the years 1979 to 1989, entitled A Cosmic Poet From Martinique, in the form of a double album that is now indispensable.
