L’argent et la Femme – Bumba Massa, 1982

,

🇨🇩🎸🎺💃💥 By the time he published l’Argent et la Femme, in 1982, Bumba Massa had long been a well-known figure in Congolese music, rumba and soukous. Since the mid-60s he had founded or played in a number of orchestras, until finally joining Franco’s TP OK Jazz in 1976. He stayed there for two years, before going solo. L’Argent et la Femme – a huge programme! – is undeniably one of his hits, in the purest Congolese tradition. Despite the almost non-existent musician credits, the spotted guitars of Syran Mbenza and Bopol Mansiamina are a sure guarantee of quality. A millimetre-perfect brass section is unmistakably reminiscent of the arrangements of OK Jazz or the Bantous de la Capitale, on an album destined to set the dancefloor alight. And they’ve more than achieved their goal!
