🇯🇲🎵🎤🌞🎥 The Reggae Sunsplash Festival has been held at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay, Jamaica, since 1978, at the initiative of Tony Johnson and others. The first edition featured performances by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear and Third World. You’d be forgiven! In 1981, the festival took place at the beginning of August, a few months after Marley’s death. The event was naturally dedicated to him, and it was also the first year that the festival was filmed and recorded. The Wailers, Rita Marley and Ziggy were all there. The headliners were Steel Pulse, Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Gregory Isaacs and Third World. Elektra released a festival album, and this promotional sampler, with four live tracks. Steel Pulse covered Handsworth Revolution, and Third World, his hit, 96° In The Shade. With the I-Threes, Rita Marley performed Belly Full and Black Uhuru conclude with an epic Plastic Smile. Sunsplash Festival came to an end in 1996, followed by irregular resurgences. A 2025 edition is scheduled to take place in the Netherlands next July, with Morgan Heritage among the performers.
