A Pou Zot – VS Quartet, 1986

,

A Pou Zot, Victor Sabas’s first (and virtually only) album, is a little slice of Creole and Latin jazz, released in 1986. The Guyanese bassist had assembled a promising young quartet, featuring Mario Canonge on one of his very first recordings (a priori, his second after an obscure Latin jazz record that disappeared off the radar). The quartet is completed by Brazilian Dousty Dos Santos (Os Maracatu, and closer to home, Doudou Gouirand), and Guadeloupean drummer Serge Marne, who has played with the likes of Roland Louis and Alain Jean-Marie. Victor Sabas also invites another musical prodigy, Allen Hoist, an incredible multi-instrumentalist and singer who has been recording all over the Afro-Caribbean music galaxy for the last forty years. This album by the VS Quartet, now impossible to find, has been lovingly reissued in its original spirit by Julien Achard for Diggers Digest, which is a real godsend for collectors!
