Pretaluz – Waldémar Bastos, 1997

,

🎵🌍 🇦🇴🇵🇹💫🎸 Angolan singer Waldémar Bastos fled his homeland in 1982 to escape the civil war and settled in Portugal. His music blends African influences with Fado and Brazil, and this Pretaluz from 1997 is a delicate little gem. In this « Black Light », Bastos blends accents of morna and rumba into his compositions, and the result is as unclassifiable as it is successful. It’s a swaying, guitar-driven folk that moves from nostalgia to celebration in the blink of an eye. The fact that David Byrne is the album’s executive producer is no mean feat either! In fact, he signs the album’s liner notes. The singer died in Lisbon in 2020.
