Our thoughts are with the Bernard family on this sad day, with the passing of Jacky Bernard. My condolences go out to his family and friends, and of course first and foremost to Alex, Nicol and Guillaume… Jacky Bernard was of course the keyboard player and one of the pillars of Fal Frett, definitely one of the historic references of Creole jazz made in Martinique. Jacky was also a regular keyboardist with Malavoi – on the famous Case à Lucie, for example, and more recently on the group’s latest album, Masibol. You can hear him on the synths on Roland Brival’s Creole Gypsy, and before that he played bass on a number of historic records for Marius Cultier, Al Lirvat, Henri Guédon… In 2005, he produced his only album as a leader, La Tendresse des Marteaux, accompanied by his brothers. We met on that occasion, and I was able to catch up with him in his Fort-de-France studio, thanks to Jeff Baillard. May the earth be light to you. RIP.
