Slow Motion – Andy Narell, 1985

,

Among the early works of one of today’s steel drum references, Andy Narell, this Slow Motion from 1985, which is slow in name only. An excellent jazz funk with tropical overtones, featuring a group of musicians who know each other well. Steve Erquiarga’s explosive guitar, Kenneth Nash’s percussion – also a producer – and Keith Jones on bass. Soon, Andy will be playing with Dave Samuels and Paquito d’Rivera’s Caribbean Jazz Project, before setting up his own projects based around the purely Caribbean treatment of steel drums, taking part in the Sakésho adventure, paying tribute to calypso with Relator, mixing with Louis Mhlanga’s Africa, and so on… Over the last few years, Andy Narell has been working on the creation of a definitive sampling bank of steel drum sounds, which has just been published, along with an album produced entirely using this bank. A benchmark.
